When you buy a cookbook, the authors try to tell you that just about anyone can produce gourmet food just by following their simple directions. We all know that this is just not the truth though. It takes a little bit more skill than just the ability to follow directions from a fancy cookbook. There are some cooking skills that you need to develop and here are a few tips in this article that can help you develop them and let you become a great cook.
Tip One: Do not just divide the ingredient list to come up with a smaller portion size. If a recipe serves four people then yes, dividing it by two will give you a portion that serves two people. The problem is, that the recipe will not end up tasting the same. Dividing many ingredients, particularly spices and herbs may give you a taste that is not the same as the original. Instead of dividing a recipe, you should cook it as is and then just freeze what you do not eat. If you make it right, you will want to eat the leftovers anyway so you do not need to worry about food going to waste.
Tip Two: Be willing to experiment with your recipes. All great chefs are willing to experiment and this is how they come up with some exciting and original recipes. If you never experiment because you are afraid to fail, you will never come up with anything that is originally yours and you will be an a
verage cook at best. Be willing to experiment and be prepared to fail from time to time. Your family will be okay with the occasional poor meal when you hit one out of the park. Remember, the local pizza place is always a phone call away if the worst happens.
Tip Three: Practice always makes perfect, especially with cooking. You should be cooking at least two or three meals a day to help you refine your cooking skills. Don't give up when you make a bad meal, it is going to happen from time to time. No great chef started out that way. They all had to practice, so keep at it and yo will get there. Even the best chef in the world has made a meal that the dog would not even eat.
Tip Four: Use the best quality ingredients that you can afford. You might be surprised at the difference in taste between quality ingredients and low cost ones. This is especially true with produce. Try to shop at farmers market to get your produce. The cost is not much more and you can be assured that the taste will be better and the ingredients are cheaper. For meat, try to find a butcher that you can build a relationship with. Butchers can provide you with fresher and better cuts of meat than the ones you can find at chain stores.
That is really all there is to it. Follow these four simple tips and you can become a truly great chef. All it takes is patience and devotion. Just commit yourself to it and nothing can hold you back. Good luck and bon appetit.
