Our elderly family members are important to us and there are a few things that you can prevent from happening to them just by paying a little more attention.

For those of us who have found ourselves responsible for taking care of an elderly person in our life, whether it is one of our parents, an in law, an aunt or uncle, we obviously care about their welfare or we would not have taken on this big responsibility. Older people can become almost like children in some instances and they require special care to make sure their latter years are as safe, comfortable, and rewarding as we can help them to be.

When we have an elderly person living in our home, it can be easier in some ways and harder for us in others. The living in of an elderly person means that we have to be responsible for their care around the clock. Sometimes it is possible for an elderly person to be left alone and sometimes not. If they are not able to be left alone, we have to make sure they have someone to stay with them so they have the attention they need.

If an elderly person still lives in their own home and you have to oversee them from a distance, you need to make sure that home is as safe as it can be. This means that they should always have working smoke alarms and are able to get them selves out of a burning home on their own. Wearing a device that alerts the fire department or police in the event of an emergency could save their life. Home monitoring systems are ideal for elderly people who live on their own even if they do have someone like you who checks on them regularly and sees they have what they need.

Today there are plenty of safety devices available for bathrooms that can make bathing so much easier and safer for elderly folks. Walk in bathtubs, safety seats, and grab bars are great additions for the elderly. These things are helpful even if you are present in the bathroom with them.

If you have the responsibility for overseeing an elderly person in a care facility, you still need to make sure of their safety. Some nursing homes have been cited during inspections because of lack of adequate fire safety equipment such as sprinkler systems or finding illness causing mold growing in the facility. The care your loved one is getting might not be up to the standards that you expect Abuse of the elderly has also become a problem in some facilities. It is up to you to make sure your loved one is being cared for properly and safely.
