It will be Halloween soon and I can't wait. Not that I'm one of those crazy people that spend an insane amount of time and money decorating their homes with ghoulish monsters in the windows and strewing their lawns in RIP props and the like.

No, I splurge with a plastic cackling witch that crows whenever someone walks by close enough and a silly and simple costume for myself. Last year I simply bought a silver tinsel wig with little devil's horns on top. A silver devil? Don't know, doesn't matter.

Last year was a year to remember a far as Halloween goes. It was dreadfully cold but all parents knew it had to be done. Thankfully my son is older now and can walk faster, I thought to myself! It was cold, wet and windy. Perfect for an all Hallows Eve but not so perfect for someone who can get chilled in a nano second.

We were off as soon as it was dark and started making our rounds with lots of goodies accumulating in the bag in no time at all. I made a mental note of all the ones I would bribe my son for when we got home - the caramels, the mini Mars bars, one or two bags of potato chips!

It was all I could do to keep my weary bones and cold hands from ruining my night (and my son's). It was a new neighborhood for us as we had just moved in earlier that year and so we did not know too many of the neighbors yet.

Some 4 or 5 blocks down we came across a larger number of people than usual so decided to make our way pronto.

They seemed to be having an extraordinarily good time despite the cold
. It seems that a generous neighbor was offering parents of the trick or treaters a little something to "Take the nip outta you" as I later heard the Scottish lady say to me.

The kids knocked on the door as usual and collected their treats but then low and behold a woman behind the door called out to us, the parents, and beckoned us to come closer. We did and boy were we glad we did!

I do not jest when I say that there was practically a stampede when they saw her emerge from her door with a tray full of steaming little cups.

She had a tray with little Dixie cups filled with a delicious concoction. It was warm, earthy and had a little kick to it. It was heaven! It was such a cold night and a hot warm and spiked drink worked a miracle.

Suddenly things didn't seem so bad or so cold. I swore to myself then and there that I would do the same next year. Apparently, it's become quite common but this was a first for me.

I asked her what was in it because I explained I wanted to do the same next year. She willingly obliged. She said that other recipes call for fancier ingredients, but this one is old and true and used to be used to ward off illnesses in her time.

So here it is and enjoy. You don't have to offer it at Halloween but I know they would love it if you did!

* 2 parts dark rum
* 2-1/2 parts hot tea
* 1-teaspoon honey (or brown sugar)
* 1 pinch ground nutmeg
* 4 drops vanilla essence
* 1 small cinnamon stick
* 1 small knob of butter

Mix all ingredients in a saucepan and slowly simmer. Keep warm until ready to serve.
